Industry Collaboration Equips Teens for Future Careers in Cyber Security!
The Hg Foundation, CyberFirst, and RTC North collaborated this summer to pilot a programme designed to provide teenagers with foundational knowledge and practical skills in cybersecurity. The four-week initiative concluded with a celebration event that acknowledged both the students' participation and the outcomes of the programme.
The initiative was designed to spark interest in cyber careers, develop technical skills, and provide clear guidance in navigating pathways into the sector. With a predicated 33% growth in cyber security roles by 2030 and a growing shortage of talent in the industry, the programme directly addresses an urgent skills gap faced by employers.
The celebration event brought together students, parents, carers, mentors, and industry professionals who have all played a vital role in shaping the students’ journey. The event was opened with remarks from Sally Wilkinson at RTC North who has been instrumental in facilitating and organising the initiative, supporting students daily throughout the four-weeks. James Turner, Chief Executive at The Hg Foundation shared the inspiration behind the initiative and spoke passionately about the importance of cybersecurity and preparing the next generation for the digital future.
The afternoon was filled with energy and excitement, with a striking balloon wall and neon sign providing the perfect backdrop for students to capture proud moments with their families and certificates. In a wonderful surprise, each student was presented with their very own laptop, generously donated by Deloitte, ensuring they can continue their learning beyond the programme.
James Turner, Chief Executive at the The Hg Foundation “Building the next generation of cyber talent – and ensuring that it reflects all walks of life – is crucially important: for our society, economy and security. It has been a privilege to have supported such an inspirational group of young people as they learn about the tech sector, gain new skills, grow their networks and take the next steps in their education and careers.”
Over the course of the programme, participants met with industry experts, tackled real-world challenges, and developed hands-on skills that will prepare them for future careers in cyber security. Students participated in employability workshops, two weeks of immersive cyber experience with industry professionals, and site visits to local companies. They also completed a one week in person course, where students put their skills to the test in real-world defensive scenarios - covering key topics such as common cyber threats, cyber defence strategies, network security, and managing digital footprints.
Looking beyond the summer, students will continue to receive mentorship through Year 13, including support with UCAS applications, CV writing, personal statements, and interview techniques. Those who complete the programme will also be eligible to apply to the CyberFirst university bursary scheme that offers financial support and work experience throughout their higher education
The Hg Foundation provided a £90,000 grant to fund the pilot. The programme leveraged CyberFirsts track record of promoting cybersecurity opportunities to young people, and RTC North who has invested in STEM programmes across the north to make it a success.
This programme marks a significant step forward creating a diverse and scaled pipeline of future cyber professionals - and the success of the pilot has laid strong foundations for future expansion.
Sally Wilkinson, STEM Project Manager, RTC North
“Our aim was to bridge the gap between skills and experience for young people starting out in cyber and tech—something particularly important here in the North East, where the proportion of 16–24-year-olds not in education, employment or training has been the highest in the country since 2014.
It has been a privilege to host our first cohort of 50 students and to connect them with 34 cyber and tech companies. This experience has enabled them to build skills, gain exposure, and explore the wide range of career opportunities available. The commitment, enthusiasm and maturity they have shown is far beyond their years, and we are extremely proud of them.
I would like to extend my sincere thanks to The Hg Foundation for trusting RTC North to deliver this programme. Their funding and support has been instrumental in changing the lives of these young people."
